Wilson and Costanza-Chock's article "New Voices on the Net" really struck a chord with me. As an African American journalist, I was appalled learning that non-Hispanic Whites own 90 percent of business in nearly every media platform, although they only comprise 69 percent of the overall U.S. population.
My goal is to emphasize how the media continues to perpetuate inequality via the lack of African American representation or a skewed and inaccurate representation of African Americans.
My hypertext essay will explore African American representation on various media platforms, including print, television, radio, public and private broadcasters, etc. I will also reference various interviews with African American journalists detailing their experience in a primarily white-owned company, as well as reference African American owners of media companies. My essay will also include a brief history about African Americans and media, as well as how African Americans use social media today.
My goal is to show how African American journalists can produce more and better content geared toward the African American community.
